Ice skating is one of those fun and festive winter time activities that you can really enjoy in Crested Butte. There are a few options in the area to get your fix with outdoor rinks. And if you're an ice hockey fan, be sure to check out the town league for regularly scheduled games.
Big Mine Ice Arena
The Big Mine Ice Arena's natural ice uses no refrigeration. The natural ice skates faster and is a real treat for those accustomed to indoor refrigerated rinks. From December through March the rink is filled with hockey players every weekday afternoon and evening. Public skaters enjoy the natural ice during the day while the sun is shining. The weekends are typically packed with leisure skaters and youth hockey games. There is no charge for usage. When open, call the rink hotline (970) 349-0974 for the daily schedule. Town League hockey is run by West Elk Hockey Association (WEHA)Â
Skate Rental
Ice skates are available for rent at the Crested Butte Nordic Center, 970-349-1707. Located next to the Big Mine Ice Arena, CB Nordic staffs the warming house and rents ice skates for use on the public rink. All skate rentals include a use fee assessed by the Town of Crested Butte. Current fees for skate rentals are $20 for adults and $10 for kids.Â
Skate Crested Butte South
Whether you're a local, or staying in our quaint little hamlet just south of Crested Butte, the open skate rink is easily accessible. Located in the business district of CB South, a large outdoor hockey rink and skate pond hosts open skate, open hockey, hockey games and more. For a full winter schedule check here. The rink is open from 10am to 9pm from the months of December to March (weather dependent).
