Backcountry Parking

In Uncategorized by

With the increased usage of forest areas in Crested Butte, trailheads, parking lots, and roads have become overcrowded. Guidelines are listed below for finding sustainable backcountry parking. Together we can curb the impact of vehicles in these pristine environments.

  • Park ONLY on durable surfaces, which include rock, dirt, and gravel.
  • A good rule of thumb is to only park in established spots.

  • Many of the roads in Crested Butte cross over private property. Be respectful, aware, and stay on the road.
  • Keep an eye out for for signs that state "Private Property" or "No Parking".
  • Some signs warn of rock fall areas, deep river crossings, or truck/bus turnarounds. Follow these to ensure your safety.

  • Crested Butte hosts a very delicate and pristine high alpine ecosystem. Parking off-trail can permanently damage it.
  • If it's alive, don't park on it
  • If someones sees you parking on flowers they might think it's okay to park on flowers too.
  • Leave No Trace with your car and Keep Crested Butteful for the next visitor.
