5 Crested Butte Nordic Trails You Must Ski

In Uncategorized by pdopchev

With about 55 kilometers (about 34 miles) of immaculately groomed track around the Town of Crested Butte it makes for a hard choice of where and when to ski. CB is the Nordic Ski Capital of Colorado and the Crested Butte Nordic Center keeps that on par year after year. Lots of skiing means lots of choices. We’ve set out to bring your 5 trails you can’t miss this winter (in no particular order).

1. Magic Meadows

(Xavier Fané)

6 miles west of Crested Butte, on Kebler Pass, in the Gunnison National Forest lays the Lily Lake trail. This is the best early season spot and will no longer be groomed when Kebler Pass closes.

2. Mordor

This is the hilliest and steepest of all the trails around. It consists of long uphills that take you to the base of Mt. Crested Butte. This trail is a difficult doozy that lives up to its Lord of the Rings name.

3. Mike’s Mile

This trail takes skiers all the way out the Slate River Valley to Gunsight Bridge. The trail is on an old rail grade left over from Crested Butte’s rich mining history.

4. The Bench

The Bench provides an iconic view of town that will have you falling more and more in love with Crested Butte. Head of for a late evening ski and enjoy the “city” lights.

5. Town Ranch

Close to town (just behind the school) and dog friendly, this loop is perfect for getting a couple long laps in, whilst enjoying the wide vistas of the surrounding mountains.

Remember families, kids 17 and under ski and rent for free in CB!

Attention Dog Owners

Beginning this year, dog passes for season pass holders will no longer be free. With the increase in the number of dogs using our dog friendly trails, a fee of $40 per dog is necessary to cover the cost of maintaining dog trails and the pet waste stations. Also, no more than 2 dogs may accompany any pass holder. To avoid further increases in dog pass costs, dog owners must be vigilant in picking up their dog’s waste.
