Top 5 Easy CB Mountain Bike Trails
Easy does not have to mean boring, especially when you’re riding in Crested Butte. For those of us who are new to mountain biking, or just an occasional rider, gradually working up to doubletrack and singletrack from dirt roads is the way to go. This list is perfect for exploring some of the many options around town as well as building confidence toward other more challenging trails. These easy trails are ranked by difficulty from more challenging (5) to beginner (1).
Sustainable Trail Use
These trails and many others like them are maintained by the Crested Butte Conservation Corps. From picking up trash to trail maintenance to poop removal, they do it all and keep our backcountry pristine. Please help support them with a tax-deductible donation (501c3).
5. Awakening
Step up your ride with a bit more incline on Awakening at Evolution Bike Park at Crested Butte Mountain Resort. There’s big, flowy, man-made berms and a straighter downhill, which means you’ll zip through aspen groves while still within your comfort zone.
4. Wagon Trail
The Wagon Trail is the alternative to taking Kebler Pass Road (County Rd 12) up to Lake Irwin. Take on some rocky sections, a few climbs, and weave between tight bushes as the trail parallels and then crosses Kebler Pass Road a few times before connecting to Lake Irwin Road. From here you can loop back on the road down to town, head up to Lake Irwin, or continue on to the western section of the trail down the other side of Kebler Pass (more challenging). 3. Tonys - Divine - Deli
Tony’s trail offers a few technical features, but for the most part you will be greeted with nice smooth singletrack, and relatively mellow grades. This combination of trails will feature beautiful views of Whetstone Mountain, the Town of Crested Butte, sage brush, aspen trees, and wildflowers. No dogs on this trail, please. 2. Lower Loop and Woods Walk
The Lower Loop and Woods Walk are a quick spin west of town. Soak up views of Mt. Crested Butte, Peanut Lake, Paradise Divide and the Slate River Valley. While Woods Walk will have a few more technical features at the start, trails turn into very simple riding with no steep grades or obstacles. Enjoy great biking in the fall when the aspen leaves change, or in the summer with stunning wild flowers. For detailed trail info: Click Here
1. Brush Creek Trail
Located up Brush Creek Road, just a short ride from town, this out and back trail travels north for roughly 2 miles before returning back to the parking lot for another 2 miles. There’s only one major obstacle (a tiny, but rocky stream carving through the trail), which might require a quick dismount. Enjoy grand views of the surrounding mountains north east of town including Pearl, Teocalli, and White Mountains. For detailed trail info: Click Here
Consider Starting on Forest Roads (Easiest)
If this is your first time mountain biking, or if singletrack seems a bit too intimidating, all of the access roads provide a great introduction to riding in Crested Butte. Forest Roads like Kebler Pass, Slate River, Washington Gulch (pictured), and Gothic all turn into dirt and act as great out and back rides. These roads also access many of the trails on this list. For ones with a little less vehicle traffic, check out Brush Creek Road and Cement Creek Road. For a map of these roads: Click Here
