Top 6 Fat Bike Trails in Crested Butte

Fat bikes were introduced in 2009, and have seen tremendous growth in the recent years. These larger brethren of mountain bikes are made to fit 3.5″ or larger tires, and extra wide rims. Because of the wide footprint, accompanied by extremely low tire pressure, fat bikes loft very well on snow.

There are a few rental options in the valley and plenty of places to roam about. The Nordic Inn has a sweet deal that includes discounted lodging and fat bike rentals. Use promo code: FATBIKEX

Gothic Road

Now a groomed trail, the road to the former mining town of Gothic one of the most scenic trails in the area. From the Snodgrass trailhead, it’s an easy downhill on the way to  Gothic, especially when freshly groomed. It’s just under 4 miles to Gothic, so feel free to turnaround at any point if you’re not up for the whole journey.

Brush Creek Road

Also a newly groomed Fat Bike trail is Brush Creek, just a few miles south of Crested Butte. You can take groomed trails to get there as well if you prefer. This relatively mellow trail takes you back behind Mt. Crested Butte, and is even groomed a bit up the Canal/Strand Bonus trail.

Town Ranch/Riverbend Loop

The perfect trail for those taking their first spin on a fat bike or who just want an easy, yet scenic loop. These trails are accessible directly from town, groomed by the Nordic Center, and completely free to use.

Kebler Pass Rd

If you’re looking for a quiet area – this may not be your place, but with all the use there, does come great packed surfaces, including regular grooming and awesome downhill. Kebler Pass is 7 miles up the road, a gradual climb, and has drainages off to the sides.

North Village

These groomed trails are located just north of the ski resort, in the valley between Snodgrass and Mt. Crested Butte. We recommend this for those looking for a more challenging ride and a big calorie burning workout. It also happens to be one of the courses used for the Fat Bike World Championships.

Slate River Road

The trailhead is almost 3 miles up the road. It’s a fun out and back into some beautiful county with a gentle upward grade to Pittsburg – 4 miles – then turns up towards Paradise, which is your sign to turn around.
