Fall Colors Update: South Central Colorado
(9/25/13) – With only the quickly melting patches of white to remind of us Sunday evening’s snow storm, bluebird skies have once again greeted the West Elk Mountains. Even with cooler temperatures now prevailing, it seems Mother Nature has put her colorful fall display mostly on hold until next week. For those looking to swing by, this weekend along with the first weekend in October should be excellent for viewing the aspen change.
The best colors locally found yesterday (other than the most obvious Whetstone area), seem to be in the Slate River Valley just northwest of Crested Butte. A quick jaunt through the Woods Walk trail and Lower Loop provided some decent patches of yellow, orange, and auburn in contrast with green surroundings and white snow capped peaks.

An earlier drive through the Kebler Pass area revealed that around 85% remains unchanged and we’re still at a week or so away from seeing some major color on either side of it. However, the stark white peaks do provide some nice scenery.
