15th Annual Gothic Mountain Tour
More and more people are leaning on ski-mo skiing as their form of winter exercise, and because of that more events have popped up across the nation. But its seems like Crested Butte has been on the leading edge and has stamped their name with the Elk Mt. Grand Traverse, and the 115h Annual Gothic Mountain Tour.
23.5 miles and 5,000 vert
The Gothic Mountain Tour has received Gunnison County Public Health approval to proceed on Sunday, February 28, 2021 in the mountains around Crested Butte. Now in its fifteenth year, the Gothic Mountain Tour is a rugged backcountry ski race that traverses 23.5 miles with over 5,000 feet of climbing. This will be the third event presented by race organizer Crested Butte Nordic in the era of COVID-19. The Gothic Mountain Tour is a unique ski mountaineering (skimo) race because it is almost entirely in the backcountry instead of on a ski resort. Given this terrain, CB Nordic partners with the Crested Butte Avalanche Center, a locally run avalanche forecasting center that focuses on the CB area, to make the event successful. The Gothic Mountain Tour acts as a fundraiser for both CB Nordic and the CBAC, so both organizations can continue to help people get outside safely.
For 2021, the race includes modifications such as a virtual racer briefing, wave starts, required masks in start/finish zones, drive-through bib pick-up, and a virtual awards ceremony. These kinds of protocols are becoming de rigueur for CB Nordic.
