Three Rivers has been running the Taylor River since 1984, making them the most experienced outfitter in the Gunnison-Crested Butte corridor. Their base at 130 County Road 742 in Almont sits right at the confluence of the Taylor, East, and Gunnison rivers, a 20-minute drive from Crested Butte and 10 minutes from Gunnison. The Taylor Canyon is tighter and more dramatic than the big-volume Arkansas or Colorado rivers: glacier-carved walls rise straight from the banks, and you’re likely to spot bighorn sheep, deer, and occasionally moose.
Trip options run from gentle Lower Taylor floats (Class II, kids 8+ welcome) to the Upper Taylor paddle trip (Class III, minimum age 12) and the locals’ favorite Extender, which links the Upper and Middle canyons for three hours on the water. Their Float ‘n Dine packages pair a scenic float with dinner at Garlic Mike’s or their on-site Smokehouse, one of the best-value combos in the valley. All trips include splash gear, life jackets, booties, photographer, transportation, and a certified guide.
Book the Extender trip. Itโs the one the guides take their own friends on. Paddle through a beautiful private property section with fewer crowds. Love the BBQ cruise for a more chill option!
