Founded in 1987 when President Jimmy Carter and a group of CB locals launched the Physically Challenged Ski Program, the Adaptive Sports Center has grown into one of the country’s leading adaptive recreation programs. Operating year-round from the Kelsey Wright Building at the base of CBMR, ASC provides over 6,000 guided activities annually to more than 1,200 participants, from alpine skiing and mountain biking to whitewater rafting, rock climbing, kayaking, and camping.
What makes ASC extraordinary is its commitment to access. A full-day adaptive lesson actually costs over $900 to deliver, but the Access For All initiative brings the participant price down to just $95, covering instruction, equipment, and lift tickets. The difference is covered by donations, grants, and the annual Crested Butte Open gala and golf tournament. Every adaptation is approached individually, with highly certified instructors matching equipment and technique to each participant’s abilities. Programs are inclusive to families and friends, so the whole group can share the experience together.
Even if you don't need adaptive services, ASC's annual Crested Butte Open in August is one of the best events in town: a gala at Lacy Ranch followed by golf at The Club. Great cause, great party.
