Wheelies and Waves opened in 2015 with a small fleet of paddleboards and a simple idea: get more people onto Lake Irwin, Long Lake, and the Slate River. A decade later they run two shops, 509 Elk Ave in downtown Crested Butte, and 110 S Main Street in Gunnison next to the Arts Center, with one of Colorado's largest watersports demo fleets. Rentals cover SUPs, kayaks, and river tubes for paddling, plus Pedego electric bikes for exploring town, the Slate River trail system, and the singletrack out toward Hartman Rocks.
The staff ride the same trails and paddle the same rivers they're renting out, so the trailhead advice at the counter comes from personal knowledge, not a brochure. They're also the valley's Pedego dealer and will walk you through the paperwork for the Colorado state e-bike rebate (up to $1,100 for qualifying buyers) and the local GCEA rebate if you're thinking of buying rather than renting. The Gunnison shop doubles as home to The Skate Corner for skate gear. Reserve ahead on busy weekends.
Grab an e-bike and head up the rec path and over toward Gothic. The scenery and open air are unbeatable and there's a bonus coffee stop at Coffee Lab next to the gift shop in Gothic. Wheelies & Waves also post daily Slate River water level readings in summer so you know if it's runnable.
