DESCRIPTION:PHOTOVOICE: Real Food Stories from Across Gunnison Valley\nOpening Reception Friday\, December 4\, 5:30 – 7:30 p.m. Show runs in the Kinder Padon Gallery December 4 – January 14. \nSince COVID began\, Mountain Roots has interviewed folks across the valley to document the pandemic’s impacts on food security. People have shared personal stories throughout a multitude of pandemic response programs; during home deliveries\, at free pop-up produce markets\, and in their own backyard gardens\, where some have sown seeds for the first time. \nWe wanted to know what their food situation is like at home—during the pandemic and prior—to learn more about our community’s food sources\, health habits and nutrition\, and if individuals are able to provide food for their own families. \nThis project showcases the faces and food stories\, aiming to open the door for more meaningful conversation regarding food security. We believe everyone deserves access to healthy food\, regardless of their economic situation—it’s a basic human right. \nAbout Mountain Roots: \nMountain Roots Food Project believes in fostering a future of food that is socially equitable\, environmentally regenerative\, and economically sustainable. DESCRIPTION:    Writing the Pandemic with Mathangi Subramanian. Sunday\, November 22\, 10 – 12 p.m. Virtual. $25 \nWe are living through extraordinary times. How do we document what we are witnessing\, feeling\, experiencing\, while honoring our strengths\, frailties\, and imaginations? In this workshop\, we will do several cross-genre writing exercises designed to help us make sense of the current moment and our current selves\, and to imagine a better future. We will also briefly discuss how pandemics have been documented in the past\, and how our voices can contribute to alternative narratives. \n  \nMathangi Subramanian\, Ed.D.\, believes stories have the power to change the world. Her middle grades book\, Dear Mrs. Naidu\, won the South Asia Book Award\, and her picture book A Butterfly Smile was inducted into the Nobel Museum by Laureate Dr. Esther Duflo. Her novel A People’s History of Heaven was longlisted for the PEN/Faulkner award and the Center for Fiction First Novel Prize\, and was named a finalist for the LAMBDA literary award and the Valley of Words prize.  A former public school teacher\, senior policy analyst at the New York City Council\, and Fulbright Scholar\, she currently consults for Sesame Workshop. She holds a doctorate in education from Columbia Teachers College.

Are you a hobbyist looking to learn a new medium? Dive into clay with a Master Potter and learn to create the pottery you’ve always dreamed of. Ages 12 and up. Location: The Art Studio at 111 Elk Avenue.\nWith weekly three-hour sessions\, take one class or several! Space is limited to three students per session\, so reserve in advance.\nWHEN\nFridays\nJanuary 10 – April 3\nTIME\n1 – 4 pm\nCOST\n$80 per session \n\n\n\n\n\nInstructor and Master Potter Laura Cooper Elm hosts 3-hour open throwing sessions seasonally at The Art Studio of the Center for the Arts. DESCRIPTION:Sew Fun Embroidered Poncho\nDesign your own delightfully customized hand-stitched\, embroidered and embellished poncho or shawl. Learn basic sewing and embroidery stitches\, design your own poncho or shawl\, and create your own one-of-a-kind accessory. Cost includes four sessions of instruction\, pattern\, stencil\, textile paint\, foam brushes / sponges\, and pattern paper. Please supply your own sketchbook; 60” wide light or medium cotton jersey fabric in one color (for a heavier weight poncho / shawl\, bring a second 60” wide fabric); all-purpose sewing thread to match; embroidery floss to contrast; and long sewing pins. You may also want to bring your own thimble\, pincushion\, embroidery scissors and fabric scissors. Ages 12 and up. All skill levels. DESCRIPTION:Due to an outbreak of the Covid-19 in Crested Butte\, all events in March are CANCELED \nIncorporating ideas about composition\, values and color theory as they relate to a mountain landscape\, apply these watercolor painting techniques to your own body of work. The three-day workshop expands understanding of painting mountainscapes by focusing on high-level painting techniques\, pushing you to the next level. Intermediate and advanced skill levels. Ages 18+. Location: The Art Studio at 111 Elk Avenue. \nInstructor: Peggy Stenmark\nCost: $115\nWhen: Thursday\, March 26 – Saturday\, March 28\n9 am – 12 pm \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIn order to tailor this experience to your own art making practice\, you are required to bring your own supplies: \n\nWatercolors\, gouache or acrylic paint (whatever brand you are accustomed to)\nPalette\nAssorted brushes\nContainer to hold water\nSpray bottle\nReference photos of mountain scenes\nYour favorite drawing pencils\nA board to tape paper on (optional)\nYou must also bring your own surface to paint on – watercolor paper\, aquaboard\, canvas or gesso board – whatever you are comfortable with.
