September 16, 2018 - September 22, 2018
One of the most unique and local traditions to Crested Butte, the annual Vinotok Celebration takes place near the Autumn Equinox, beginning with the Celebration of the Harvest Mother on a Sunday and culminating in the Trial of the Grump on a Saturday. The entire week is full of storytelling, music, spectacle in the village streets, harvests and feasting. As the equinox moves, so moves Vinotok…
9/16 – Celebration of Harvest Mother
The Celebration of the Harvest Mother starts at high noon and is presented by the Crested Butte Dance Collective, featuring mummers, stilt walkers, jesters, and forest creatures introducing this year’s Harvest Mother.
9/17 – Vinotok: Myth, Meaning & Ritual and Lore of the Rune
Join Vinotok Founder and Master Storyteller Marcie Telander for this engaging presentation, telling you everything you ever wanted to know about Vinotok.
9/18 – Harvest Mandala & Harvest Blessing: Living Mandala Creation
Honor the harvest by contributing to Vinotok’s Harvest Mandala! We will create a mandala (location TBA) between 10 AM and 12 PM to be a living work of community art, and hold a blessing of the mandala at high noon.
9/18 – The Goddess’ Red Tent
Calling all women! Come celebrate the goddess within at this luxuriating workshop of poetry, blessings, rune readings, songs, sacred belly dancing, and storytelling.
9/19 – Frank Orazem Memorial Storytelling Evening
Gather around the potbelly stove of the Crested Butte Mtn. Heritage Museum, like in the old days, to hear back-when tales of Crested Butte and the surrounding area.
9/20 – The Botsie Spritzer Memorial Liar’s Contest
We transform the historic Kochevar’s Saloon where community members gather to tell and hear tall tales, whoppers and adventure stories from the community with prizes for the best liar. The Green Man is announced. A naughty, raucous evening. 21+.
9/21 – Community Feast & Handfasting Ceremony
The evening begins at 5:30 PM with Marcie Telander, D.Div. performing the ancient, non-denominational HANDFASTING CEREMONY where couples, families, friends, partners, and the entire community join in sharing vows and promises of re-commitment for a healthy, transforming future.
9/22 – Vinotok Mumming, Trial & Burning of The Grump
Vinotok ends with the ancient tradition of mumming through restaurants and bars, the Trial of The Grump, and the anticipated Burning of The Grump.
