Romantic-era composer Franz Schubert is the undisputed master of leider (art song). During Schubert’s lifetime, friends would hold in homes informal gatherings that celebrated Schubert’s music; these gatherings were called “Schubertiade.” This concert will present a recreation of such an evening, with a performance by emerging superstar baritone, Michael Kelly, along with classical guitarist, David Leisner – hailed as “Among the finest guitarists of all time” (American Record Guide).
Praised as “expressive and dynamic” and “vocally splendid”, American baritone Michael Kellycontinues to distinguish himself as a consummate artist, sought-after for his riveting interpretations of recital, concert and operatic repertoire. Captivating audiences with his “exquisitely self-effacing” artistry, Mr. Kelly is a versatile and innovative vocalist, having performed with many of America’s leading orchestras and opera companies, including: The Cleveland Orchestra, Detroit Symphony, Houston Symphony, Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra, The Mostly Mozart Festival, Opernhaus Zurich, Chicago Opera Theater, Gotham Chamber Opera, Mark Morris Dance Group, Boston Early Music Festival and Ars Lyrica.
“Among the finest guitarists of all time”, according to American Record Guide, David Leisner’s career began auspiciously with top prizes in both the 1975 Toronto and 1981 Geneva International Guitar Competitions. His recent seasons have taken him around the US, including his solo debut with the Atlanta Symphony, a major tour of Australia and New Zealand, and debuts and reappearances in China, Japan, the Philippines, Germany, Hungary, Switzerland, Austria, Denmark, Sweden, Ireland, the U.K., Italy, Czech Republic, Greece, Puerto Rico and Mexico. Currently, he’s Chair of the guitar department at the Manhattan School of Music.
