SUMMARY:Crested Butte Music Festival: Sally Miner Lecture Series – The Only Three Russian Composers You Need to Know
DESCRIPTION:Russia is in the news quite a bit today and in a rather unflattering light. That said\, Russian history is rich and complex and inseparable from the performing arts. Composers in particular have engaged with Russian culture and politics in a fascinating dance that balances reverence for the past with cynicism. This lecture discusses how the three most important Russian composers were both Western and Russian\, and how they subtly took aim at their contemporary politics. \nReserve Free Tickets \nPreview: \nTchaikovsky\, Stravinsky\, Shostakovich. This progression of compositional prowess reflects the development from late Imperial Russia to the beginnings of Modernism to the height of the Soviet Union. In this lecture you’ll learn about Stravinsky’s connection with visual arts movements of the early twentieth century\, how John Williams stole musical ideas from Tchaikovsky\, and how Shostakovich subversively resisted Soviet authorities. \nLecturer: Dr. Erik Christian Peterson\n \nDr. Erik Christian Peterson is a Juilliard-trained\, international concertizing musician and lecturer at institutions such as Oxford\, Princeton\, and NYU. He is Co-Artistic Director of the Crested Butte Music Festival.

SUMMARY:Music on the Mountain: Soul Rebels
DESCRIPTION:The Soul Rebels started with an idea – to expand upon the pop music they loved on the radio and the New Orleans brass tradition they grew up on. They took that tradition and blended funk and soul with elements of hip hop\, jazz and rock all within a brass band context. The band has built a career around an eclectic live show that harnesses the power of horns and drums in a deep pocket funk party-like atmosphere. \n

We’ll break up into multiple groups\, each with a crew leader\, and head to a section of trail for instruction followed by construction. After a full day of work\, everyone will head back to the campsite at 4pm to enjoy plenty of libations from Ska Brewing\, followed by stellar raffle prizes and backcountry catering by Rim Tours. Volunteers are invited to camp out on-site\, enjoy a campfire and laughs\, and then wake up Sunday morning to coffee\, breakfast\, and a make-your-own sandwich bar provided by Rim Tours\, before getting back to work.  We’ll stage tools up on the trail\, as it’s another 1.7 miles from the HQ/camping area to the trail work.  So biking in\, e-biking in\, and/or Moto’ing in is recommended as it’s a haul to get up there!  Walrod Rd is a high clearance road\, so if you need to bike or hike in\, CBMBA will bring your camping and working gear in for you! As part of your RSVP\, let us know if we can help get your gear in.  Parking for those who need to bike or hike in can be done across the way from the main Walrod parking area.  Signs will be present to direct you – see maps below.  Please do RSVP for the headcount/food count\, as well as if we can help you by getting your gear in for you. \nWhat To Bring: Work gloves\, long pants\, hat\, boots or sturdy shoes\, backpack for items you want on the trail\, water and snacks for Saturday (we recommend you carry 2 liters on trail)\, sunscreen\, camping gear and warm clothes for Saturday night. Lots of water – can’t have enough!  Bring enough food outside of the meals that Rim Tours will provide. \nWhat We Supply: Tools\, water at the campsite\, Saturday dinner\, Sunday breakfast\, Sunday lunch\, beer\, campsite\, backcountry bathrooms. \nDon’t miss this family-friendly community event! Camping is optional but encouraged. Please RSVP to info@cbmba.org if you intend to camp and/or have meals with us so we can plan accordingly. \n
